想要找到比今天更高的二氧化碳浓度（以及相应更高的全球气温），我们要回溯相当久远的历史，或许要直到中新世中期，约1500万年前。[21]很有可能到21世纪末的时候，二氧化碳水平将会达到自始新世在南极洲长出棕榈树（大约5000万年前）之后从未达到过的高度。今天的生物物种是否仍旧拥有那些令其祖先得以在远古那个温暖世界中繁盛的性状？这个问题目前还不可能有答案。

“要让植物耐受温暖的气温，有各种不同的办法。”西尔曼告诉我，“它们可以制造出特殊的蛋白质，可以改变自身的代谢，诸如此类。但是热耐受的代价可能很大。而且我们预计未来将会达到的高温，在过去几百万年里都没有出现过。所以，真正的问题在于：动植物在如此悠长的时期中是否一直保持着那些代价很高的性状特征？要知道，这是长得足以让哺乳动物大多数辐射物种产生而又消失的一段时期。如果它们的确保持着那些性状，那么我们将有可能收获一份惊喜。”但如果它们没有保持着呢？如果因为在几百万年的长久时期里，这些代价很高的性状特征都无法给它们带来优势，因此已经被它们丢弃了呢？

“如果进化论按照它通常的方式来起作用的话，”西尔曼说，“那么大灭绝的场景——我们不管它叫灭绝，而是会用一个更委婉的漂亮说法，叫‘生态性缩减’——那场景看起来就会像是世界末日。”
